What to expect

Your first visit will start quite informally. You will meet the Sensei who will be taking the class that day and he will be able to answer any questions you might have. You can sit and watch or take part, it’s up to you. You will see all levels of ability training together. The lessons are tailored to suit the ability of the class. There is no risk, beginners start by learning basic moves with no contact and move on steadily as their skills develop into more advanced and demanding techniques. As a beginner you will not be expected to hit anybody or take blows. All moves are controlled and you are taught how to control your moves so that you will be able to train with a partner safely and confidently.

Wear something loose and comfortable (like a tracksuit) and arrive say 15 minutes early to give you time to meet the Sensei and settle in.

If you decide to continue training you will soon want to start wearing a traditional karate uniform, called a Gi. At SeiDoKan we prefer our Gis to be white.

The first thing new members will be taught is dojo etiquette; bowing, when to speak etc. When the class starts an air of formality is expected and respect is shown to all karateka, including new members.

The lesson starts with the students lining up in grade order. The Sensei will stand in front of the class and bow, the class returns the bow, then we start with some warm up exercises. After that the lesson starts and is led by the Sensei. You will be given instruction and guidance according to your level and grading. As a beginner you will be taught basic techniques such as stances, punches and blocks. There will be short breaks throughout the session so you can recover your breath from the periods of activity. Sensei constantly monitors the class to ensure everybody is training within their level of fitness. At the end of the lesson there will be another bow and the class is dismissed.

We often relax in the bar with a soft drink after training, you will be welcome to join us.

If you decide to join you will be given a copy of the training syllabus and your license will be applied for.
